Most patterns work through contrast — a dark mark on a light ground, a figure against a field. The Sashiko Natural shirt works differently. Warm tan dashes on an oatmeal ground: two tones close enough in value that the eye reads texture before it reads pattern, craft before it reads print.

The running stitch columns are the same as those found across the Sashiko series — vertical, regular, drawn from the Japanese embroidery tradition developed in rural Japan as a method of reinforcing worn fabric. But here, the restraint of the colourway changes what the pattern does. It quiets it. It makes it something you notice gradually rather than immediately.
