Description:

Komon is a category of Japanese textile design characterised by small, repeating patterns distributed evenly across the fabric surface — a tradition developed for everyday kimono, where the density and precision of the repeat was a measure of the maker's skill. The Komon Patchwork shirt takes that tradition and fractures it: chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, fan forms, tortoiseshell lattice, karakusa vine scrolls, fish-scale arcs and geometric grids are arranged in irregular blocks across the fabric, each panel carrying a different motif, the whole composition shifting between deep navy and sky blue in a positive-negative alternation that references the resist-dye origins of the craft.

The back panel introduces a large curved division between the two tones — a compositional move that gives the shirt a second reading when worn.

Every Panel Tells a Different Story

Komon means "small pattern" in Japanese — a category of textile design in which a single repeating motif is distributed evenly across the fabric surface, the precision of the repeat a measure of the maker's skill. Traditional Komon was made for everyday kimono: understated, disciplined, worn close to the body.

The Komon Patchwork shirt takes that discipline and opens it up. Chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, fan forms, tortoiseshell lattice, karakusa vine scrolls, fish-scale arcs and geometric grids are arranged in irregular blocks across the fabric — each panel a different motif, the whole composition alternating between deep navy and sky blue in a positive-negative inversion that references the resist-dye origins of the craft.

On the back, a large curved arc divides the two tones — a compositional move borrowed from the tradition of Boro patchwork, where the seam between panels was never hidden, only honoured.
